Why aren’t you taking full advantage of the services offered by your DLP?

In tight financial times it’s important to get the most out of the software that’s already in your environment. Companies typically purchase a Data Loss Prevention (DLP) solution to satisfy their need to protect company secrets and to ensure their organizations are compliant with the regulations appropriate to their industry. But there are plenty of services offered by the product that extend beyond the core functions.

1) DLP Can be used to protect the corporate image
Data Loss Prevention technology can be leveraged to keep your company out of hot water. Most DLP products leverage policy triggers that can be set to use key works to stop e-mails and other data traffic from leaving the corporate network. The same logic can prevent emails containing offensive or harassing language from being transmitted, avoiding damage to the company’s reputation or depending on the severity, potential litigation.

2) DLP can be used to assist is organizing data scattered across the enterprise
The file scanning agents search for specific types of information. Once located the tool can be configured to either, log where it found the data, move the data to a more appropriate location, or simply delete the data. Moving or deleting data can be disruptive to the users of that data. A DLP tool can create a small stub file that can be left in place of the original data with instructions on where it can be found or as a notification to the users that the data has been intentionally deleted.

3) DLP can integrate with Bluecoat SG Proxy servers
This integration allows the functionality of a proxy server to report events to the DLP system allowing these events to be reviewed in a single console. DLP systems will then extend the scope of security events the users of the system can manage. Depending on the organizational structure of the company this can remove a monitoring burden off of the proxy team and realign it to members of the compliance team.

There are many functions that can be automated with DLP tools, for more information about these and others, feel free to reach out to IDMWORKS for a consultation on fully implementing a DLP solution.
